Mindy is my desi queen! She is so funny and witty, and because she’s first and foremost a writer, her book was obviously even more incredible than I’d hoped for! Kaling’s book is a collection of short stories, essays, and personal anecdotes divided into chapters within a few major categories.

The most striking part of the book, of course, was her writing style. It exuded her brilliant personality and was so cleverly hilarious and heart-warming at the same time. Each story was relatable and funny in a way that really made it seem like Mindy was talking directly to me!
I also learned a little bit more about the person that Mindy is. I love that she isn’t afraid to tell the world what’s on her mind, or to tackle the more difficult topics. She openly talks about body image, uncommon for a Hollywood celebrity, and she‘s real about it. She also includes stories about not fitting in with her college sorority, and the struggles of her start as a writer for The Office. Essentially, they’re the trials of a hard-working but determined self-made person.
In fact, the biggest takeaway from Why Not Me? is Kaling’s resolute conviction to good old- fashioned hard work - a lesson we can all do well to remember.
I don’t understand how you could have self-confidence if you don’t do the work. Because confidence is like respect; you have to earn it.
